The role of the mayor, deputies and consorts

The mayor is a councillor elected each year to serve as the borough’s ceremonial representative. Their role includes:

  • Chairing council meetings
  • Representing and promoting the borough of Rochdale at events
  • Supporting local charities and community initiatives. Charities supported by the mayor
  • Welcoming visitors and dignitaries to the borough

The deputy mayor is also a councillor elected each year to support the mayor. If the mayor is unavailable, the deputy mayor steps in to carry out their duties and represent the borough.

The mayor’s consort or mayoress is a person chosen by the mayor to accompany and support them during official engagements. The deputy mayor may also appoint a consort or deputy mayoress to assist in their duties.
