Roadworks and road closures

Current and planned roadworks.

Our programmed road improvement schemes for 2017-18

We're spending £3.2 million to improve roads across the borough of Rochdale.

Current roadworks in Rochdale and across Greater Manchester

We carry out roadworks as part of the essential repair and improvement of our roads. Public utility companies also carry out roadworks to maintain essential gas, water, electricity and phone services. Some of these works will require the use of temporary traffic lights or temporary road closures.

Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Location: A58 Halifax Road between Birch Road and Smithy Bridge Road.
Expected start and finish: emergency works commenced 21 February 2018. It's estimated these works will continue well into the following week.
Reason:  the works are required by Electricity North West to locate and repair a high voltage mains cable fault which is affecting a significant number of properties in the area, including Birch Hill Hospital. The excavation to locate the fault is occupying the full width of the footway and over a significant length resulting in insufficient width to maintain pedestrians in the footway. Electricity North West implemented a closure of the footway with the correct signage situated either side of their work area and also footway closed ahead signs with a pedestrian diversion at the pedestrian crossings facilities located at both Birch Road and Union Road.
Alternative route: the contra-flow system will only be implemented off peak between the hours of 9am-4pm, outside of these times there will only be one lane closed heading towards Littleborough to facilitate a pedestrian walkway.
