How to deal with severe mould and damp

If you're heating and ventilating your home properly and still dealing with ongoing damp or mould issues, you should take action to protect your health and the health of anyone you live with.

Identify the cause of damp and mould

Sometimes the cause of damp and mould is easy to identify, such as a leaking roof or gutters.

Sometimes it's not clear why damp and mould are occurring in your home. You may need to speak to a damp specialist if you don't know what is causing the problem. Damp specialists can identify the cause of damp and mould, and recommend how to fix it.

Get help if you're a private or social housing tenant

If you're a private or social housing tenant, you should report issues with damp and mould to your landlord or housing association as soon as possible. Make sure you tell them about:

  • Repairs needed to your home.
  • Impact of damp and mould on your health.
  • Damage to furniture and belongings.
