Find out how we monitor the weather and decide how to treat the roads in winter.
Predicting snow and ice
To work out when ice or snow is on the way, we:
- Monitor the weather conditions 24 hours a day throughout winter
- Receive data from our weather stations within the borough
- Get detailed forecasts from the Met Office
- Sometimes inspect the roads to verify the information we have
We have 2 weather stations - one is in Middleton and the other one is on Blackstone Edge.
Both weather stations constantly monitor the weather and road conditions. The information from these and other nearby weather stations help us monitor the conditions and react accordingly.
Due to the varying geography across the borough, its climate and weather conditions can vary greatly. The weather stations cover both extremes of the climate in the Rochdale borough. The data they provide helps us react to the varying conditions.
