£1,000 payment for new nursery staff
As part of a government initiative, you may be entitled to a £1,000 payment if you're offered a permanent role at a nursery in the borough.
Check if you're eligible for the payment
You don't need to have any early years qualifications or to have worked in a nursery before to be eligible for the payment.
You’re eligible for a payment if:
- You've applied for and been offered a full time or part time permanent role at a nursery in the borough of Rochdale
- You aren't undertaking an apprenticeship
- You haven't worked in a permanent role in a nursery in the last 6 months
- You’ll spend more than 70 per cent of your time in the role working directly with children
How to claim your payment
If you’re offered and accept a nursery job, your employer will start a claim for the £1,000 payment on your behalf.
Once verified by the Department for Education, the payment will be made directly to your bank account after you’ve been in the role for 6 months. If you leave before then, you won’t receive the payment.
The Department for Education will cover Income Tax and National Insurance on the payment. However, it may affect your Universal Credit or student loan repayments.

Above all, you’ll play a huge part in supporting each child’s social, emotional and early learning as they grow.
What skills you need
To work in a nursery, you need:
- Good listening and communication skills
