With just a few days left before the voter registration deadline, residents in the borough of Rochdale are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote.
By being registered to vote, residents can have their say on who makes important decisions affecting them.
The list of candidates for the local and Greater Manchester (GM) mayoral elections have been announced.
In order to vote on Thursday, 2 May 2024 in the local and GM mayoral elections, voters must be registered before 12midnight on Tuesday, 16 April 2024.
‘Make your voice heard’
Residents normally only need to register once – not for every election but will need to register again if they have changed their name, address or nationality.

Every registered voter in Greater Manchester will receive an election booklet in the post from Monday, 15 April 2024, as required by law. Postal voters can expect to receive their copies before this date. The booklet explains more about the election and information about each of the candidates.
- Councillors are elected to represent their local area and residents, and contribute to the development of local policies in areas such as social care, housing, planning, highways, and education.
- The Mayor for Greater Manchester Combined Authority is a major figure in the political life of the city-region, with unique powers and responsibilities. This includes setting budgets and priorities for Greater Manchester’s public services including transport, housing and planning, the fire and rescue service, Police and Crime Commissioner responsibilities, and acting as an ambassador for the city-region.
You can vote at your local polling station, by post, or by proxy (appointing someone to vote on your behalf). The deadline to apply for a postal vote in these elections is 5pm on Wednesday, 17 April 2024. The deadline for applying for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday, 24 April 2024.
Voters will need to show a valid form of ID at polling stations, such as a passport, driving licence, some types of bus pass or proof of age card, blue badge, or a free voter authority certificate. The deadline for to apply for free voter authority certificate is 5pm on Wednesday, 24 April 2024. Applications for a free voter authority certificate can be made online or in person at Number One Riverside, Smith Street, Rochdale between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
Clare Poole, elections manager at Rochdale Borough Council, said:
“These are opportunities to make your voice heard and have a say about who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life. Make sure you are registered to vote before the deadline. That deadline is just days away, so I would urge people who haven’t yet registered to do so as soon as possible.”
