As the sun sets, we’ll gather for a beacon lighting ceremony, honouring the courage and contribution of those involved in the final moments of the Second World War.
This symbolic act of remembrance offers a moment to pause, reflect, and pay tribute to those who gave so much.
Commemorative remarks and moment of silence
A short address will be given before the beacon is lit, followed by a moment of silence in honour of the fallen and those who returned forever changed.
The Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Janet Emsley will be in attendance.
Why VJ Day matters
VJ Day marks the official end of the Second World War, following the surrender of Japan on 15 August 1945.
As we reflect on the profound global impact of the war, this event is a chance to come together in peace, remembrance and unity.
Let’s honour those who endured, celebrate the freedoms we hold today, and remember that peace is always worth protecting.
