Your options for charging an electric vehicle (EV) at home depend on where you park.
EV charging if you park on the street
If you park your vehicle on the street outside your property, you can:
- Apply for an electric vehicle charging channel - this is a shallow channel dug out of the pavement outside your property that allows you to safely run a charging cable to your car.
- Use our EV charging points in car parks across the borough
- Find other public EV charging points on ZapMap
To charge your vehicle, under the Highways Act 1980, you cannot:
- Run a cable across a public footpath at any height, even with a protector or ramp.
- Install a private or reserved charging point on a public footpath or highway.
- Connect to a lamppost.
EV charging if you have a driveway, garage or other off-street parking
If you have off‑street parking, like a driveway or garage, you may be able to install an EV chargepoint at home.
You’ll need a qualified electrician approved by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles to install your chargepoint. This is to make sure the work is safe and meets building regulations.
You don't usually need planning permission unless your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building.
