Care Quality Commission assessments

Our goal is to make sure our residents receive the right support, at the right time, in the right place. We're committed to helping people live well.

Under the Health and Care Act 2022, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) can independently check how well councils deliver care services.

We welcome assessments from the CQC to help improve the services we deliver for our residents.

Why the CQC assess our services

CQC assessments are designed to:

  • Give independent feedback to the public and government about how care services are performing in each local area.
  • Identify problems and risks that could affect people using care services.
  • Help care services improve by sharing good examples and lessons learned across councils.
  • Guide national policy decisions.

How we're assessed

The CQC use a framework to help them assess how we're performing.

What happens during an assessment

An assessment usually takes place in 3 stages:

  1. We’re notified: the CQC formally tells us they’ll be assessing our services.
  2. We share information: we send the CQC information about how our services work so they can assess and compare it to national data.
  3. They visit us: a CQC team visits us to meet senior leaders, staff, and people who use our services. After the visit, the CQC publish a report and give us a rating.

How we prepare for assessments

To make sure we’re prepared for an assessment, we:

  • Make CQC findings and assessments part of our day-to-day work by discussing updates, sharing insights and taking part in activities and workshops.
  • Use data and feedback about our services to identify our strengths and any areas we need to improve.
  • Maintain an action plan for any developments or improvements we identify, supported by a dedicated CQC delivery group.
  • Work closely with local care providers to make sure our standards are being applied consistently.
  • Carry out our own self assessments based on CQC guidance. View our adult social care CQC self assessment documents
