How we're improving the borough

New homes

We want to bring around 10,000 new homes across the borough to support our growing population and create a better mix of properties.

A major focus for these sites will be brownfield areas in our town centres where we have identified sites for up to 2,000 new homes and around our 5 railway stations, where we have identified land or up to 7,000 new homes.

These are some of the major housing schemes coming forward.

Central Retail Park site, Rochdale

We're Creating 200 new homes on the former Central Retail Park site, a brownfield site close to Rochdale railway station.

The new development will feature suburban homes to rent, built to low carbon specifications. The new neighbourhood will also include a linear park, a running track, gym and community hub alongside community space such as café-bars and delis.

We expect to receive a planning application for this development in summer 2021.

Former Car Craft site, Castleton

We're developing 102 brand new family homes at the former Car Craft site in Nixon Street, Castleton.

The site, which has been vacant for a number of years, will feature 3 and 4 bedroom properties and secure land for a future primary school.

John Street, Rochdale

We're bringing forward 240 new homes in central Rochdale next to the Rochdale Riverside retail and leisure development.

Known as Upperbanks, this development is set to complete in 2024. It will create high-quality apartments to rent and regenerate a currently derelict site in Rochdale town centre.

Former British Vita site, Middleton

We're working with developers to bring forward 400 high-quality family homes at the former British Vita site in Middleton and around 220 new homes at Royle Road in Castleton.

Junction 19, M62, Heywood

Up to 1,000 new homes will be created at junction 19 of the M62 in Heywood as part of a wider regeneration project which will also see the creation of new employment space and a brand new link road, alongside new public transport provision and public realm improvements.

Former Akzo Nobel site, Littleborough

We're supporting the creation of up to 200 new homes at the former Akzo Nobel site in Littleborough.

This is being delivered by Homes England.

Regeneration of Langley, Kirkholt and East Central Rochdale

We're working to complete the regeneration of land within the Langley, Kirkholt and East Central Rochdale areas to create sustainable communities.

The regeneration will help to provide quality and affordable housing with investments in community facilities and infrastructure.
