Starting your first job can feel like a big leap, but for Noor, a systems and data apprentice it’s been the perfect way to build skills, gain confidence, and discover a whole new world of work.

Noor is a systems and data apprentice at Rochdale Borough Council.
What made you choose an apprenticeship at Rochdale Borough Council?
"I wanted to build up skills for a full-time role, but without the pressure of jumping straight into a permanent job I might not enjoy.
It felt like a safe way to test the waters, and I liked that I could keep studying while getting real work experience."
How do you balance your time between work and study?
"I spend about 6 hours a week on coursework, plus one full day at Rochdale Training doing assignments and assessments.
It can be a juggle, but you get used to switching between work mode and study mode."
What helped you get started on your apprenticeship?
"I had a Level 3 BTEC in Business from college. It helped, but it wasn’t essential, you can join straight into a Level 3 apprenticeship and learn as you go."
What does a typical day look like for you?
"Each day starts with checking emails, both my own and those in the shared e-learning inbox.
I manage system updates for new starters, process transfers, close accounts for leavers, and resolve issues like login errors and user history fixes.
No 2 days are the same, when e-learning is quiet, I support the HR team with various projects, so there's always something new to get involved in."
What’s been your proudest moment so far?
"Helping switch our whole system over! It was hectic, hundreds of emails, loads of tiny details, and fixing random course errors, but seeing it all come together felt amazing."
What advice would you give someone thinking about applying?
"Read the job description carefully, be prepared to balance work and assignments, and make sure the location is practical. It can be a lot to juggle, but it’s so worth it."
What does ‘Succeed at Rochdale’ mean to you?
"For me, it’s about doing my best, finishing my apprenticeship well, and using what I’ve learned to move on to my next role, hopefully here at the council."
What’s a fun fact about you?
"I grew up in Belgium and used to win creative writing competitions. One of my stories about a giant and a cherry cookie even won an award in Japan, I’ve still got the plaque, but it’s all in Japanese, so I’ve no idea what it says."
