From conveyancing and housing to courtroom advocacy, Munya’s journey shows how consistency, curiosity, and community focus can take your career further than you imagined.

Can you tell us a bit about your role?
“I’m a Litigation Officer at Rochdale Borough Council. My work is really varied, I deal with everything from criminal prosecutions and debt recovery to civil litigation."
"A lot of my role involves advising clients, helping them to resolve disputes without needing to go to court. No 2 days are ever the same, which is what I love about it. There’s always a new challenge or case that keeps me learning.”
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
“The most rewarding part is definitely advocacy, especially in education matters. Knowing that my work has a direct impact on a child’s school attendance is incredibly fulfilling."
"Education is a fundamental right, it’s a cornerstone of a young person’s life, and being part of that positive change feels amazing.”
Tell us about your journey so far
“When I joined the council, I was working in property and conveyancing, helping people move into tenancies and working closely with the development agency. It was great experience and a solid foundation.”
“Since then, I’ve had a lot of personal and professional growth. The management here has always encouraged me to keep learning, and they supported me while I completed my degree. That support really helped me step up into my current role.”
How has the council supported your development?
“When I first joined, I came straight from university, so I had a lot of theory but not much hands-on experience. It was overwhelming at first, but my colleagues and managers were brilliant. They guided me, gave me feedback, and helped me build confidence.”
“The council genuinely invests in its people, there’s trust, guidance, and real opportunities to progress.”
What advice would you give to someone starting a similar career?
“I’d say be consistent. Believe in yourself, stay focused, and don’t be afraid to start small. It’s okay if you don’t have everything figured out, just keep learning and growing.”
“And maybe stay off social media a bit, it’s easy to get distracted, but focus pays off in the long run”
What does ‘Succeed at Rochdale’ mean to you?
“For me, it’s about personal growth and career development. There are so many opportunities here if you’re willing to take them. It’s a place where you can grow your skills, build confidence, and really make an impact.”
