Can you tell us a bit about your role and what a typical day involves?

“My role is all about helping people through life’s most important moments, from registering births and marriages to supporting families during times of loss. It’s work that really connects you to the community.”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

“One of the best parts of my job is meeting people and conducting ceremonies. Every family brings something different, their own ideas, traditions, and stories. No 2 days are the same; I’ve had everything from intimate gatherings to unforgettable moments, like the time an owl ring bearer decided it preferred the roof to the aisle. It’s a privilege to be part of those milestones in people’s lives.”

“I also really enjoy seeing how our team comes together to make a difference. Everyone in the service is passionate about what they do, and that makes Rochdale a great place to work”

What do you value most about working at Rochdale Borough Council?

“I’d say the diversity. Rochdale is such a vibrant place, both in our workforce and our community. We work hard to embrace that diversity and to meet people’s different needs and aspirations. It’s what makes the job so rewarding.”

“It’s also a very supportive environment. The council is full of opportunities to learn and develop, and people genuinely want you to succeed.”

How is your work making a difference for local people?

“We’re proud to support people at some of the biggest moments in their lives, welcoming a new baby, celebrating a marriage, or saying goodbye to a loved one. Those are emotional and meaningful times, and we’re there to make sure everything goes smoothly and respectfully.”

“Our customers are always at the heart of what we do. Knowing we can make those moments easier or more memorable makes the work incredibly fulfilling.”

How has Rochdale Borough Council supported your growth?

“The council really invests in its staff. There are so many opportunities to build your skills. I’ve recently started an apprenticeship degree in Chartered Business Management at Manchester Metropolitan University, which the council is funding. They’ve been really supportive, giving me time to balance my studies with my workload. It shows the council’s commitment to helping people grow and progress in their careers.”

What does Succeeding at Rochdale mean to you?

“For me, succeeding at Rochdale means feeling like you’ve helped someone. Whether that’s guiding a family through a difficult time or celebrating a happy occasion, it’s about knowing you’ve made a difference.”
