The achievements of more than 200 cared for children and young people have been recognised by Rochdale Borough Council during a special awards ceremony.
Hundreds of medals were handed out to young people up to the age of 12 during the council’s annual ‘Our Big Day’ event at Matthew Moss High School.
This followed 273 nominations submitted by carers, social workers and teachers to mark the individual and group achievements of young people in care.
From being outstanding role models and demonstrating care towards others, to showcasing their determination, resilience and a positive attitude, these awards paid tribute to the special journeys cared for children have already undertaken.
Awards were also given to young people who have demonstrated positive engagement or progress in education, vocational or sporting achievement and outstanding efforts in extracurricular activities.
Councillor Rachel Massey speaking at Our Big Day.
Councillor Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children’s services and education, said:
“Nothing fills me with greater pride in my role than hearing about the tremendous achievements of our cared for children and getting the opportunity to celebrate their individual successes during Our Big Day.
They are all exceptional young people and show phenomenal determination to be their very best and this doesn’t go unnoticed by those around them.
They are an absolute credit to themselves on what they have accomplished, often in the face of adversity, and they send an inspiring message to so many that no matter what life may throw at you, you will not let this stand in your way to achieve the very best for you.”
In addition to an awards ceremony, children enjoyed a full day of exciting entertainment and activities with their families and carers.
From trampolines, fun fair rides and meeting iconic characters like Spiderman to face painting, outdoor amusements and lots more, there was something for everyone to enjoy, with lots of special childhood moments created on the day.
