A special summer initiative to upgrade highways across the borough has been completed, with the annual surface dressing programme improving the condition of a number of roads.

More than 43,000 square metres of roads have been treated as part of the programme, which prolongs the life of the road and improves skid resistance. Streets in each township have been targeted, with Hollin Lane in Middleton, Sandy Lane in Rochdale North, Wardle Road in Pennines, Oldham Road in Rochdale South and Manchester Road, Heywood all treated this year.

This year, an additional follow up treatment, called lock chip, has been added to the programme, to further improve the condition and appearance of the road, before the teams go back to repaint lines and other markings.

The surface dressing programme is one of many projects taking place throughout the year to improve the condition of roads and paths across the borough.

The work forms part of a wider £4 million investment into the borough’s highways network this year, which also includes major projects like the resurfacing of a section of Woodhouse Lane in Rochdale, Bridge Street in Milnrow and footway resurfacing on a section of Queen’s Park Road in Heywood.

Major projects, such as the creation of a new pedestrian crossings in Shawclough Road, Rochdale, and Oldham Road in Middleton have also been completed, with the new pedestrian crossing in Halifax Road also nearing completion.

The investment is in addition to smaller scale repairs, covering things like potholes, which are funded separately to enable the service to deal with them quickly.

Councillor Shah Wazir, cabinet member for highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said:

“Surface dressing is one of many treatments we undertake throughout the year to keep our roads in top condition as part of our multi million pound annual investment into the highway network.

“It went incredibly well this year, with all the work being completed in just over a week and a new additional, finishing treatment being carried out for the first time.”
