A Rochdale man has been fined after CCTV footage captured a vehicle he had hired being used to illegally fly tip waste, including a sofa, resulting in him taking a new seat in court.
Shahab Din of Brimrod Lane appeared at Tameside Magistrates’ Court on Friday 15 August, where he pleaded guilty to one offence of being in a position to control a vehicle from which waste was fly-tipped contrary to s33(5) Environmental Protection Act 1990.
The 6-minute recording captured an individual driving the vehicle hired by Mr Din to Corporation Road in Rochdale on the evening of 26 January 2024, where multiple bags of waste and a sofa were unloaded and discarded. Mr Din was subsequently fined £615 and ordered to pay costs of £532.18 and a victim surcharge of £246.
Councillor Tricia Ayrton, deputy leader of the council, and portfolio holder for climate change and environment, said:
“Footage shared clearly shows the blatant dumping of waste and a heavy sofa, which can be seen being dragged from the vehicle – taking more than 6 minutes to empty.”
“We all have a duty to dispose of waste responsibly - at recycling centres, through licensed carriers, or through free bulky waste collections. We will enforce fines and penalties on those who simply do not respect our borough, and we thank those who report incidents like this to us. Together we can combat fly-tipping and know we are watching.”
The council offers 2 free bulky waste collections of 3 items per household per year. Any additional items are charged at £8 each.
