About this event

Friday, 5–Tuesday, 30 June 2026. Discover a unique literary exhibition presented by Manchester City of Literature as part of the Festival of Libraries, hosted at Rochdale Central Library.

I’ve Never Read Elizabeth Gaskell celebrates the 10th anniversary of the restoration and reopening of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House. This inspiring exhibition features the work of 3 emerging writers—Georgia Affonso, Princess Arinola Adegbite and Guruleen Kahlo—who took part in special writer residencies at the house, Manchester’s only literary home dedicated to a historic author.

Beginning their journey having never read Gaskell’s work, the writers immersed themselves in her stories and explored her impact as a social reformer. Through their fresh perspectives, visitors are invited to rediscover Elizabeth Gaskell’s life and legacy in a new and engaging way.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to explore creative responses to literature, gain insight into the residency experience, and connect with Manchester’s rich literary heritage. No booking or materials are required—simply drop in during normal library opening hours.

This exhibition has been created in partnership with The Writing Squad and Manchester City of Literature.
