Elections - working at elections

Please use this form to express your interest in working at the next election. Please note, this is not an offer of appointment. 

If successful, full training will be given, and you'll be advised of fees at the time of appointment. 

Fees have not yet been agreed, however, the fees for the last election were as follows, which are subject to change:

  • Polling Station Inspectors and Presiding Officers: £280 each per day, including training
  • Chief Counter: £210 per count
  • Runners, Counters, and Front of House: £140 each per count
  • Postal Voter Openers: £12 per hour
  • Poll Clerk: £190 per day, including training
  • Poll Card Deliverer: 25p per poll card delivered

The polling day will be Thursday, 4 May 2023 from 7am-10pm. The count will be conducted on Friday, 5 May 2023 at 2 locations, Heywood Sports Village and Rochdale Leisure Centre. The count will start at 11am. Runners will be required to work from 10pm on Thursday, 4 May 2023. Poll Card Deliverers will be required to deliver poll cards from the end of March 2023 for around 10 days.

Before you start

Please make sure you've thought about which of the following roles you're interested in:

  • Presiding Officers: following the introduction of the Elections Act the postholder will be required to check voter ID. You must have been a Poll Clerk at least twice previously - we welcome applications from experienced Poll Clerks who wish to be upgraded to the position of Presiding Officer.
  • Polling Station Inspectors: the postholder will be required to make sure the polling stations meets legal requirements.
  • Poll Clerks: following the introduction of the Elections Act the postholder will be required to check voter ID and assist the Presiding Officer at a polling station - no previous experience required.
  • Chief Counters: the postholder will be in charge of a team of 6 counters and must have previous counting experience.
  • Counters: the postholder will be required to count votes.
  • Runners: the postholder will be required to assist with the count set up.
  • Postal Vote Openers: the postholder will assist with opening of postal votes and be required to work in the daytime 2 weeks prior to the election and up to election day.
  • Front of House: the postholder will be required to book staff in and give them a lanyard to enter the count when they arrive at the count centre.
  • Poll Card Deliverers: the postholder will be required to deliver a poll card to every registered elector.
