School terms, holiday dates and closures

We give schools in the borough a recommended school holiday pattern for the academic year.

Check your exact term and holiday dates with your school

Every year schools are required to choose 3 days during term time to set aside for staff training which students don't attend.

We also allow schools to change up to 2 days of our recommended holiday pattern, for example for polling days or religious festivals. You'll need to refer to your specific school's website for the exact term dates.

Unavoidable school closures

Circumstances arise from time to time when it's necessary to temporarily close a school. Headteachers should discuss and agree the closure with the local authority and chair of governors and closures should only be considered where the most extreme or exceptional circumstances make it absolutely necessary.

Each school will get in contact with parents and pupils using one or more of the following methods so that as many people as possible get the message:

  • Texting, phoning or emailing parents
  • School website
  • School answer phone
  • Local radio stations
  • Notice on school gate, door or window
