We carry out roadworks as part of the essential repair and improvement of our roads. Public utility companies also carry out roadworks to maintain essential gas, water, electricity and phone services. Some of these works may require the use of temporary traffic lights or temporary road closures.

Searching for roadworks and reporting issues: find out how long the works are expected to last, which organisation is carrying out the works and contact details for that organisation. If you have any issues to report regarding any roadworks, these should be passed on to the organisation undertaking the works.

Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Expected start and finish: Friday, 3 July 2020–Sunday, 2 January 2022 or until such measures are deemed unnecessary.  
Reason: to promote social distancing measures due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Packer Street, from its junction with Nelson Street for a distance of 56 metres in a northerly direction.
  • Temporary one-way operation on Nelson Street. Vehicles will not be able to travel in a westerly direction between the junction with Church Lane and the junction with King Street.
  • No waiting for any vehicle in the following areas:
    • The east side of King Street, from a point 5 metres north of its junction with Nelson Street to a point 39 metres south of its junction with Fleece Street.
    • The west side of King Street, from its junction with Nelson Street for a distance of 5 metres in a northerly direction.
    • The west side of King Street, from its junction with Fleece Street for a distance of 39 metres in a southerly direction.
    • The east side of Packer Street, from its junction with Fleece Street for a distance of 27 metres in a southerly direction, including the new termination point.
    • The south side of Nelson Street, from a point opposite the easterly kerb of King Street to a point 7 metres west of a point opposite the west kerb of Kong Street.
    • The north side of Nelson Street, from its junction with King Street for a distance of 7 metres in a westerly direction.
  • No waiting for any vehicles except taxis in the following areas and times:
    • No waiting at any time except for taxis in Town Hall Square, the east side within the parking bay, from a point 3 metres south of its junction with the most northerly access road connecting Packer Street to a point 3 metres north of its junction with the most southerly access road connecting Packer Street.
    • No waiting 6pm-10am except for taxis in Fleece Street, the north side from a point 5 metres east of its junction with King Street for a distance of 14 metres in an easterly direction.
    • No waiting 10am-6pm except for vehicles with a valid disabled persons parking badge in Fleece Street, the north side from a point 5 metres east of its junction with King Street for a distance of 14 metres in an easterly direction.
    • No waiting at any time except for goods vehicles loading and unloading in Nelson Street, both sides from a point 7 metres west of its junction with King Street for a distance of 16 metres in a westerly direction.
    • No waiting at any time except for goods vehicles loading and unloading in King Street, the west side from a point 5 metres north of its junction with Nelson Street to a point 39 metres south of its junction with Fleece Street.
    • No waiting 8am-6pm, maximum stay up to 10 hours, for any vehicle not displaying a valid payment ticket in Nelson Street, the south side from a point 9 metres west of its junction with Church Lane to a point opposite the east kerb of King Street.

Alternative route: the alternative route for Packer Street is The Esplanade, Manchester Road, Drake Street, School Lane and Church Lane.

Area: Rochdale
Expected start and finish: 12.01am, Friday, 1 January 2021–11.59pm, Friday, 31 December 2021. This order will be implemented on match and event days at the Crown Oil Arena, as required. The times of the road closures and restrictions will vary, however, appropriate signage will be put in place.
Reason:

  • To provide a safe and convenient place to park away team supporter coaches on match days at the Crown Oil Arena.
  • To safely vacate supporters away from the stadium.
Restriction and location:
  • Temporary one-way working on Ings Lane in a northerly direction along the westerly carriageway, from its junction with Edenfield Road to its junction with Rooley Moor Road. Vehicles won't be able to travel along Ings Lane in a southerly direction from its junction with Rooley Moor Road to its junction with Edenfield Road.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from turning right from Lisbon Street onto Ings Lane.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from turning right from Great Flatt onto Ings Lane.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from turning left from Innes Close onto Ings Lane.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from turning right from Cutgate Road onto Ings Lane.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from travelling along Wilbutts Lane, from its junction with Sandy Lane to its junction with Churchill Street.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from travelling along Phoenix Street, from its junction with the easterly side of Ings Lane for a distance of 10 metres in an easterly direction.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from waiting at any time on Ings Lane, both sides from its junction with Rooley Moor Road to its junction with Edenfield Road. 

Alternative route:

  • The alternative route for vehicles along Wilbutts Lane is Sandy Lane, Edenfield Road and Churchill Street.
  • The alternative route for vehicles along Phoenix Street is Churchill Street and Rooley Moor Road.
  • The alternative route for vehicles along Ings Lane (southbound) is Ings lane (northbound), Caldershaw Road and Edenfield Road (A680).

Expected start and finish: Thursday, 1 July 2021–Monday, 31 January 2022.
Reason: to enable an archaeological dig to take place.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Packer Street, from its junction with South Parade Street up to and including its junction with Nelson Street.
  • Temporary closure of Fleece Street, from its junction with King Street to its junction with Packer Street.

Alternative routes: there are no alternative routes available.

Expected start and finish: 12.01am, Saturday, 23 October 2021–12.01am, Monday, 1 November 2021.
Reason: to create a route for the bus replacement service while railway works are ongoing.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary no waiting and loading at any time south east of Station Road from a point 15 metres southwest of its junction with Richard Street to a point 68 metres south west of its junction with Richard Street. Except for bus replacement services.
  • Suspend part of the Borough of Rochdale (Civil Enforcement of Traffic Contraventions) (Various Streets) (Rochdale Township) Order 2008 - waiting limited 8am-6pm, 1 hour, no return within 1 hour, Station Road, Milkstone and Deeplish Ward, Rochdale, south east of Station Road from a point 15 metres southwest of its junction with Richard Street to a point 68 metres south west of its junction with Richard Street.

Alternative route: not applicable.

Reason: to repair a waste water manhole cover in the carriageway.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Dane Street, from its junction with Bridgefield Street for a distance of 15 metres in a northerly direction.

Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be Norman Road, Sparth Bottoms Road and Manchester Road.

Reason: to install a new water supply.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Back Bradshaw Street, from its junction with East Street to a point 35 metres in an easterly direction.

Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be East Street, Yorkshire Street and Edward Street.

Reason: to hold the Little Amal Procession.

  • Hunters Lane from its junction with Toad Lane to its junction with The Baum
  • The Baum from its junction with Hunters Lane to its junction with Yorkshire Street as and when required
  • Hunters Lane from its junction with the Baum to its junction with Reed Hill
  • Reed Hill from its junction with Hunters Lane to its junction with Yorkshire Street, as and when required
  • Hunters Lane from the junction with Reed Hill to its junction with Cheetham Street
  • Cheetham Street from its junction with Hunters Lane to its junction with Yorkshire Street

Reason: to hold the Cronkeyshaw Bonfire and Firework Display.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Greenbank Road, from its junction with Whitworth Road to its junction with Eva Street.
  • Temporary closure of Dewhirst Road, from its junction with Greenbank Road to its junction with Binns Nook Road.

Alternative route: there is no alternative route for vehicles.

Expected start and finish: 7.30am on Monday, 8 November 2021–5pm on  Friday, 19 November 2021.
Reason: to install traffic calming measures and reline the road as a one-way system.
Restriction and location: temporary closure and prohibition of waiting along Kent Street, for its entire length.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on site.

Expected start and finish: 7am–2pm on Sunday, 14 November 2021.
Reason: to hold the Remembrance Day memorial service.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Woodhouse Lane from its junction with Shawfield Lane for a distance of 45 metres in a north westerly direction.
Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be Shawfield Lane, Edenfield Road and Woodhouse Lane.

Area: Rochdale
Expected start and finish: 8am on Monday, 15 November 2021 - 4.30pm on Saturday, 27 November 2021.
Reason: to install a new sewer connection in the carriageway.
Restriction and location: temporary one-way closure of Aldwych from the junction with The Strand to a point 70 metres in a westerly direction only. Vehicles travelling in an easterly direction will not be affected.
Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be Kirkway, Mornington Road and Balderstone Road.

Expected start and finish: 7.30am–5.30pm each day, Monday, 15 November 2021–Sunday, 19 December 2021.
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Hill Top Drive, from its junction with Balderstone Road for a distance of 1,362 metres in a southerly direction.
  • Temporary prohibition of waiting at any time on both sides of Hill Top Drive, from its junction with Balderstone Road to its junction with Ruskin Road.

Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on site when the restrictions are in place.

Expected start and finish: 9pm on Wednesday, 22 December 2021–6am on Thursday, 23 December 2021.
Reason: to install chevrons on the railway bridge.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Richard Street, from the junction of Station Road to a point 65 metres in a south easterly direction.
Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be Lincoln Street, Lincoln Close, Oldham Road, Milnrow Road, Drake Street and Richard Street.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Expected start and finish: 8am–6pm each day, Tuesday, 28 September 2021–Thursday, 30 September 2021, Monday, 4 October 2021–Thursday, 7 October 2021, Monday, 11 October 2021–Wednesday, 13 October 2021 and Monday, 15 November 2021–Wednesday, 17 November 2021.
Reason: to use the area as coach parking for the Safe Drive Stay Alive event.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary no waiting at any time along Lance Corporal Joel Halliwell VC Way on the south westerly side from a point 54 metres south east of a point opposite the south easterly kerb line of Old Hall Street for a distance of 52 metres in a south easterly direction.
  • Suspend part of the Borough of Rochdale ((Civil Enforcement of Traffic Contraventions) (Various Streets) (Middleton Township) Order 2008) (Amendment) (No.43) Order 2017 - Waiting Limited, 2 Hours, No Return Within 1 Hour - LCpl Joel Halliwell V.C. Way, North Middleton Ward south westerly side from a point 54 metres south east of a point opposite the south easterly kerb line of Old Hall Street for a distance of 52 metres in a south easterly direction.

Restriction and location: temporary closure of Elm Street, from a point 45 metres south east of its junction with Oldham Road for a distance of 35 metres in a south easterly direction.
Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be Elm Street, Oakdene Road, Birchwood Road, Monmouth Street and Oldham Road.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Expected start and finish: ongoing
Work being undertaken: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Heywood area.
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution.

  1. Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  2. Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925.

    The helpdesk hours are: Monday–Friday, 8am–7.30pm, Saturday, 8am–12 noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.

    Alternatively, please email expansionworks@virginmedia.co.uk with details of your address and preferred contact method.
  3. Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Heywood

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of West Starkey Street, for its entire length.
Alternative routes:

  • For vehicles wishing to access Bank Top Street, the alternative route will be Bamford Road, Market Street (A58), Bridge Street (A58) Peel Street and Cherwell Avenue.
  • For vehicles wishing to access Bamford Road, the alternative route will be Bank Top Street, Cherwell Avenue, Peel Street, Bridge Street (A58) and Dawson Street (A58).

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Ladyhouse Lane from its junction with Newhey Road to its junction with Elizabethan Way.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the order is in operation.

Area: Pennines
Expected start and finish: 8am, Sunday, 10 October 2021 – 6pm, Sunday, 31 October 2021 or until the works are complete, whichever is sooner
Reason: to repair a water leak in the carriageway.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Calderbrook Road from a point 15 metres south of its junction with Whalley Avenue for a distance of 30 metres in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Harehill Road, Church Street, Halifax Road, Todmorden Road and Barnes Meadows.

Area: Pennines
Expected start and finish: 11.30pm, Saturday, 23 October 2021 – 5.30am on Sunday, 24 October 2021.
Reason: to carry out maintenance to the level crossing signals and telecommunication systems.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Smithy Bridge Road from a point 50 metres north west of the level crossing to a point 50 metres south east of the level crossing.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Milnrow Road Littleborough, Willdhouse Lane, Kiln Lane, Bridge Street, Rochdale Road, Milnrow Road Rochdale, Albert Royds Streets and Halifax Road.
