Honorary Aldermen, Honorary Alderwomen and Freemen - Freedom of the Borough

Honorary Freemen

Section 249(5) of the Local Government Act 1972 permits the council to confer the title "Honorary Freeman" on persons of distinction and persons who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the borough.  The conferment of such status may be made to a person or to a body corporate.  This is the equivalent of what is commonly regarded as 'Freedom of the Borough'.

The status of an Honorary Freeman is a purely honorary one in acknowledgement of the distinction of the person or in recognition of previous service, and does not give any special status to attend or address meetings of the council or any committee or sub-committee.
