Accessible to all - new council website is number 1

After a recent upgrade, the Rochdale Borough Council website has been rated as the most accessible council website in the UK.

Rochdale.gov.uk has been totally updated with a range of improvements to make it much more usable for people with a broad range of disabilities including hearing and vision difficulties.

The website is now more secure, with all pages being delivered across Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) to give residents confidence in using the site, and its search engine optimisation has been improved. There’s a new search engine built-in, making it easier to find what you want faster and lots of extra online forms so you can do more tasks than before.

It has a fresh new look and is much more user-friendly on mobile devices, which is important as over 80 per cent of residents now use mobile devices to access council content.

With over 4,750 pages it’s a big site, but there are now more flexible page layouts to better promote content and help residents find information faster. This makes it easier to access council services online.

Although it only went live recently, the website has already received national recognition, achieving first place in the Sitemorse Local Government Index. They rank all 411 local government websites for performance, compliance, accessibility and quality. The site has also achieved the Internet Crystal Mark for plain English.
