Brownfield sites
We always work to develop on brownfield sites.
This reduces the pressure on the greenbelt and repurposes derelict sites across the borough.
We have:
- Secured more than £12 million from the government's brownfield land fund. This will help bring forward over 1,000 new homes and regenerate derelict sites across the borough, including the former Central Retail Park site in Rochdale and land surrounding the British Vita Site in Don Street, Middleton.
- Redeveloped several council-owned brownfield sites, including land at Durham Street, Lincoln Street, Albert Royds Street and Entwistle Road. This has created over 240 new homes for affordable rent.
- Secured funding and started work on more than 242 new apartments. These are located in Rochdale town centre next to the new shopping and retail development, Rochdale Riverside.
- Progressed plans to create more than 200 new homes at the former Central Retail Park site in Drake Street, Rochdale. We're completing this in partnership with Capital and Centric.
- Formed a unique alliance with Network Rail and others to support the delivery of new homes around the borough’s 5 railway stations. This is part of our new rail strategy. We’ve already identified several derelict sites which could be developed over the next 10 years as part of this strategy.
- Prepared residential masterplans for Rochdale, Heywood and Littleborough. This is part of our aim to identify land for 2,000 new homes in our principal town centres. We're also developing plans for Middleton.
- Secured £1.65 million of external funding to build 225 new homes on a major brownfield site at Royle Road in Castleton. Work is set to get underway soon.
- Redeveloped the former Carcraft site at Nixon Street in Castleton in partnership with Homes England. We're currently progressing a planning application for 100 new homes on this site.
