Roads - gritting

The weather is monitored closely over the winter season and when frost, ice or snow is expected we will grit a number of specified roads.  For details of specific roads and routes or to report a problem or to request the provision or refill of an existing grit bin please contact the helpline.

Our gritting services will treat the formation of ice and remove accumulated snow from its highways as soon as possible.  Priority is given to major trunk roads and bus routes. 

We will also make every attempt to grit by hand busy footpaths in areas of particular high use or other dangerous areas as soon as possible.

The provision of grit bins will be made in areas where there is a risk to pedestrians such as areas with steep hills, locality to schools and main roads and minor roads with sharp bends.
