Street lights

To report urgent problems with street lights, illuminated signs or bollards please contact the Street Lighting Team on 0800 015 0452.

Urgent Problems are:

Columns or posts knocked down
Door off on Equipment
Exposed electrical wires
Damage or defect resulting in a risk to public safety e.g. part of lighting apparatus hanging loose, column likely to fall over.
Damage or defect to the lighting apparatus that could potentially damage property
More than 3 consecutive lights out
Anything at all that is dangerous or a risk to the public
Damage after a road traffic accident

The more information you can give us the better (is the light out altogether, going on/off, burning all day, intermittent), include the number of the column if you can. If you cannot see this then please state the exact location or adjacent house number.

What are the repair times?

Usually, outages are attended within 5 working days but we cannot guarantee this during busy periods or in bad weather. If there is a problem on the electricity cable feeding the column, notification is sent to the Utility who will attend after getting our report.

Leaning or damaged lamp columns

An Inspector will come out to assess the damage and then determine how urgent the job is.

Can the lighting in my street be improved?

All changes including improvement requests will be considered by the Authority and prioritised accordingly. We take into account age and condition of the existing installation along with the light output.

Street lights replacement programme

In July 2011 Rochdale Borough Council and Oldham Council embarked on a joint programme of work to replace thousands of street lights, signs and bollards, providing a safer environment and a more energy efficient lighting system.

Over the next five years 40,000 street light columns across Oldham and Rochdale boroughs will be replaced, together with a range of illuminated signs, bollards, beacons and sub way lighting that do not conform to current lighting standards throughout both boroughs.

The new assets will be maintained for a further twenty years under a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract signed with the Community Lighting Partnership, a consortium between Pell Frischmann Consulting Engineers Ltd and Equitix Ltd. E.ON U.K. Ltd is its principal sub-contractor undertaking the replacement programme.
