Street naming and numbering register
Naming your house
You need to contact us before naming your house. If a property
is already numbered the property owner must still contact the
council requesting that a name be added. It is a Legal requirement
that the number remain, as part of the address.
The name does NOT however form part of the official address for
that property, and the number must still be displayed on all
correspondence.
It is also the owner's responsibility to inform the Land
Registry of the name so that the deeds can be updated.
Single Properties
If you are a developer of a new property, you should contact us
to request a number for the property when you receive your Building
Regulations. You will need to send the request, with a plan of
the position of the development in relation to other properties, as
a
PDF
file to
be included in the central database.
Single property naming
or numbering request (26kb Word document)
We will allocate the numbers and and contact all utilities
companies, Land Registry, Royal Mail, emergency services, Ordnance
Survey, and all relevant council services.
You should pass on the relevant information to the
prospective purchasers of the property.
Large estates or apartment complexes
When you start work on site we will ask
you to write in with suggestions for ideas on road names.
We will check the suitability of the road names in the local
area. This takes about two weeks.
When the name is agreed, we will register the street name and
the numbering. You can then inform prospective buyers of their
new address.
We will send the information to public utilities, emergency
services, Land Registry, Ordnance Survey, and relevant Council
services.
When appropriate, we will ask you to provide new street name
plates to our standard design.
You will need to provide all plans as
PDF
files to be included in a
central database.
For brand new estates we need you to enter into a Section
38 Agreement. Please state on the form, if you wish to do so. This
will then be passed to the relevant engineer to arrange.

Renaming or renumbering a street
You should give careful consideration to the original
naming request as we are reluctant to rename a street once it is
named.
Where plans have changed and renumbering or an additional street
name is necessary, the procedure is the same as above: send us
suggestions for the changes. The person changing the
details must tell the Land Registry once we have informed
them of the renumbered properties.
All relevant service providers, emergency services and Royal
Mail will be informed of all changes.
There is a charge of £78 + VAT for changes to details of
plans.
