Potholes and road maintenance

A pothole is where the surface of the road has been eroded and a hollow has formed. You can get answers to our most frequently asked questions about potholes.

Report a pothole or damage to the road surface

Please give us as much detail as you can to let us know where the pothole or road damage is. For example 'Two metres from the southern kerb, outside 26 Acacia Avenue.'

We decide on the severity of a pothole by the risk it poses to road users. This is difficult to judge because all potholes present some risk. The factors we take into account include:

  • Size and depth of pothole
  • Traffic type, speed and volume
  • Road alignment and visibility
  • Position in relation to road width.

Potholes can also appear on pavements and footways.
