Cycle lanes and routes

Cycle Routes are principally indicated by signs and markings. They may be either on the carriageway, on footways either shared with or segregated from pedestrians, or specially designated cycle paths.

The borough has a great deal of open space and a good bridleway network, but few urban traffic free routes. Work continues on projects to expand the urban traffic free and quiet routes for cyclists.

The Pennine Bridleway

This 120 mile route passes through the borough. Find out more at The National Trails website.

Three Bridges Cycleway

The Three Bridges Cycleway links the centre of Littleborough to Smithybridge and Wardle. The route avoids the main road but passes through three housing estates, giving residents the choice of cycling or walking for some local journeys.

Currently the signposted route finishes at Wardle Road. Confident cyclists can use the main road to Rochdale from here. We are working towards signposting a quieter route.

The Three Bridges Cycleway, admittedly short, is the start of Regional Route 80 which could eventually take cyclists to Rochdale, Bury and Bolton.
