Rochdale town centre webcam
Rochdale town centre is being transformed. We're creating a town
centre with fantastic leisure, shopping, cultural and learning
opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy.
This webcam shows images of Number One Riverside, the iconic
public library and council offices building which is due to open
early 2013. You'll also be able to watch Rochdale's striking
new transport interchange emerge from the ground on the opposite
side of the river.
Number One Riverside will bring together around 2,000 council
staff from more than 30 buildings saving over £28m in ongoing
maintenance costs. It will meet high energy saving standards with
features including solar thermal panels using the sun's rays to
generate hot water and photovoltaic panels creating renewable
energy. Plus wood chip will be burnt in a biomass boiler to
generate sustainable heat and rainwater will be collected from the
roof and recycled for the flushing of toilets. All of these will
save the council millions as well as reducing its carbon
footprint.
The new transport interchange will replace the current bus
station providing state-of-the-art facilities for passengers
including electronic information displays and a vastly improved
waiting environment.
And, in a European first, it will be a reduced carbon
public transport hub running with hydropower. A hydroelectric
turbine has already been installed next to the site which converts
energy from the River Roch generating electricity.
Both buildings are central to our ambitious plans for the town
centre. Once they are built and in operation we can demolish some
of the existing buildings on Smith Street and Baillie Street, and
the outdated bus station and multi-storey car park, to make way for
a superb retail and leisure complex with a high quality public
area.
