Council call for party people
6
February 2012
We are inviting residents to apply to organise a street
celebration to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Fees are
being waived for parties held on 4 or 5 June – but you need
to apply by Friday 27 April.
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will take place over an extended
weekend in June to mark the 60th year of Her Majesty’s reign.
Organising small, private street parties is simple and generally
does not involve activities that need a licence, but you still need
permission from the council.
There is no charge for residents for road closures, providing
applications are submitted by the deadline.
From April onwards, details of events taking place across the
borough will also be available on the council website.
Council Leader Colin Lambert said:
“I hope many neighbours will take this opportunity to get
together to celebrate this historic and happy event. There
were many successful street parties held in the borough to
celebrate the Royal Wedding last year and the council hopes that,
by pulling together all the information needed and waiving the fee,
more communities will get involved this year.”
Preparations are already underway to celebrate
the Jubilee locally. Four special beacons will be lit
throughout the borough as part of a nationwide celebration,
following on from 2002 when over 1,800 were lit UK wide to mark the
Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
A community bonfire will also be organised by
the council and on 2 June the Milnrow and District Carnival will be
followed by a street party.
