Learning and fun at the heart of Cardinal Langley RC High
8 December 2011
A major milestone in the construction programme for Cardinal
Langley RC High School has been reached with the opening of
the new ‘heart’ space at the centre of the school.
The creation of a vibrant and open space at the centre of the
school was a key part of the school team’s vision throughout the
design development process.
From the first meeting with the inspiredspaces design team, the
school clearly outlined their vision of a ’learning village
square’, characterised by light and space and providing a
significant ‘wow’ factor.
The space was also designed to allow a mixture of
different learning-led activities, including lectures and
performances together with group, practical and creative work.
As well as providing additional space for pupils to enjoy social
activities and put on school performances, the village square
houses a brand new two-storey teaching block and provides direct
access to dining and sports facilities.
Students marked the completion of the new heart space by burying
a time capsule which will be marked by a special flagstone bearing
the words "In the footsteps of Jesus, I want to make a
difference".
The next phase of works will see the complete refurbishment of
the school’s technology and science areas, with all of the works
due to be completed in time for the start of the new academic
year.
Councillor Donna Martin, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools
and Families, at Rochdale Borough Council, said:
"It is wonderful that the village square is now available to
pupils at Cardinal Langley RC High School. The range of activities
that it can be used for will be of huge benefit to students in
terms of both their personal and academic development."
Cheryl Eastwood, Executive Director, Children’s Services at
Rochdale Council, said:
"The opening of the village square at Cardinal Langley RC High
School school marks another important stage of our programme to
improve educational facilities across the borough. Investing in our
young people in this way will bring great benefits for the whole
community for decades to come."
Claire Butler, of inspiredspaces, added:
"As Rochdale Borough Council’s local education partner it goes
without saying that education is at the centre of everything we
deliver – and in the case of the new Cardinal Langley school that’s
quite literally been the case! I am confident that the school will
make the very best use of their new facilities to continue to
deliver excellent teaching and learning."
