Temporary closures of libraries
12 September 2008
We are part way through an
programme of improvement works in our libraries. So far this has
included:
- Moving libraries into new, improved buildings shared by schools
and community groups (Castleton, Langley Middleton Junction and
Norden libraries);
- Improving access for disabled people (Alkrington, Balderstone,
Belfield, Littleborough, Milnrow, Smithybridge and Spotland
libraries);
- Redecorating and redesign of the layout of stock and services
(the Wheatsheaf Library).
Where possible we try to avoid closing any of our libraries
while improvements are being made but sometimes it is impractical
or unsafe to have buildings open to the public while work is going
on.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused when your local
library is closed. We welcome your custom
at any library in the borough. Your barcoded library
card lets you borrow or reserve items from any of our
libraries.
Smallbridge Library
Smallbridge Library re-opened to the public on 28 August
2008. The library closed on 31 December 2007 for
essential building work including replacing the heating system and
the floor. We have taken the opportunity to completely refurbish
the building and have changed the layout to provide more space
for activities in the library and additional computers for public
use.
Heywood library
Heywood library is closed due to major refurbishment
works and is due to reopen in the summer of 2008. Some of the stock
at Heywood Library, notably the Best Sellers and Graphic Novels,
have been temporarily transferred to Darnhill Library. We have also
extended the opening hours at Darnhill Library, which is now also
open on Wednesday mornings and Saturday afternoons. Children's
storysacks have been temporarily transferred to Spotland Library.
We have also increased the number of events and activities for very
young children at Spotland Library.
Darnhill Library
It is intended to start work on modernising Darnhill Library
some time late in 2008 or early 2009.
