Support for asylum seekers
The Council provides support to asylum seekers under contract to
the Home Office via a consortium of Greater Manchester local
authorities where Manchester City Council acts as ‘Lead Authority’.
Asylum seekers are provided with accommodation under this contract
and support in the form of assistance with settling into their
allocated accommodation and sign-posting to required services such
as doctors, schools and so on.
The Council has no involvement or participation in determining
who is an asylum seeker or determining the validity of their claim
and has no role in determining if applicants should or should not
be granted asylum.
The Council provides this service (which is non statutory)
without any cost to Council Tax. All cost of providing the service
are met from government payments/contract income.
The homelessness advice centre will offer advice and assistance
with housing to asylum seekers who have received refugee
status or exceptional leave to remain for a limited period of time.
