Food
The Food Safety Act 1990 and Food Safety Regulations make
it an offence for anyone to sell or process food for sale which is
harmful to health. It also placed an obligation on businesses
to ensure that their activities are carried out in a hygienic way;
contact us to report problems.
An estimated five million people suffer from food poisoning in
England and Wales each year. Running a food business means that you
have a particular responsibility in protecting the health of your
customers.
We aim to ensure that all food and drink intended for human
consumption by Rochdale’s food businesses is produced, stored,
distributed or handled without risk to the health and safety of the
consumer.
We also want to provide advice and educate consumers on healthy
eating and safe food handling and storage.
Food safety work involves the inspection of food businesses on a
regular basis to ensure compliance with food legislation, and to
promote safe food. All food premises are inspected, from small
retail shops to pubs, restaurants and food manufacturers. We also
investigate hygiene complaints from premises and food
complaints.
