NHS Health Checks

Your chance to get a FREE midlife MOT

NHS Health Checks are held at local GP surgeries for adults in the Borough aged between 40 and 74 and without a pre-existing condition. NHS Health Checks assess your circulatory and vascular health and assess if you're at risk of getting a disabling vascular disease.

How do I get a NHS Health Check in the borough of Rochdale?

If you're in the 40-74 age group without a pre-existing condition, you can expect a letter from your GP inviting you for a FREE NHS Health Check. Don't worry if you haven't got your invitation yet, as you will be invited for one over the next few years. You may receive reminders about your NHS Health Check appointment by phone or email.

What is an NHS Health Check?

Your 'score'

When you have your NHS Health Check you will get an overall score that you can keep track of and seek to improve over time. Some think of this as their “heart age”. Your GP will chat to you and discuss your results. You'll be given advice and support to maintain or improve your vascular health.

There are 3 important parts of your NHS Health Check that you should know and, from time to time, monitor:

  • Blood pressure
  • BMI
  • Cholesterol count

Taking action to improve results

“Since my NHS Health Check, I have joined a gym, where I now use the treadmill for jogging and the exercise bike. I have also taken a closer look at my diet. Gone are the days of a few pints and a sandwich at the pub; instead I now eat more fruit and vegetables. I have realised it’s important to check food labels and try to understand what I can eat on a daily basis.”

What people say

“I was interested in having a health check because I wanted to find out if I had any medical problems,".

“I was a heavy person before I had the NHS Health Check,”.

“I enjoyed life to the full and didn’t care much about my health. But I was shaken up when I got an answerphone message from my GP asking me to make an appointment to discuss my blood test results.”
