details of a wide range of information covering aspects of the
areas economy including statistics and key facts on economic
strategy, trends and forecasting, the local labour market and area
profiles.
Information is also available from the 2001 Census relating to
the local area. You can view the 2001 Census findings on the Office
for National Statistics website.
Stats and maps
This application enables professionals and the public to access
statistics for a local area and display them as a map, graph or
table, and to use a map of the borough to zoom in on a location and
display local services.
Economic profile
In the 1990s over a third of local manufacturing jobs
disappeared. Even so, today 18.8 per cent of jobs remain in
manufacturing, compared with 12.8 per cent in England and
Wales. Other key sectors are distribution, hotels and catering, and
public administration and health.
Employment is concentrated in small and
medium-sized firms, which means the borough does not depend on a
few large-sized employers. The numbers of VAT registered businesses
per 10,000 working age population in Rochdale Borough has been
consistently lower than both the Greater Manchester and England
average figures. Year on year fluctuations seen at borough
level have mirrored both Greater Manchester and national
trends.
