Alternate weekly collections

Thanks to the efforts of local residents we are now recycling over 30% of our waste!

Alternate Week Collections, (AWC) take place across the borough. Glass, cans and plastic bottles are collected together in either 140 litre or 240 litre wheeled bins. Please put all these items into the bin loose - (not in plastic bags as the machinery that is used to sort out this recycling can not open bags).

The blue sacks are for mixed paper and cardboard including newspapers, all magazines, shop catalogues, shredded paper, envelopes, junk mail, (remember to remove your address), yellow pages and phone directories.

A range of different cartons that can be recycled

We can now accept fruit juice and milk containers - the tetrapak type, pictured - provided they are washed out and squashed before putting into the blue sack.

If you require another recycling bin or more blue bags please contact us on 0845 226 1800

Cans, plastic bottles and glass are sent to Greenstar in Darwen for re-processing whilst the paper and cardboard goes to Severnside in Bolton where it is sorted.

It is important that the glass, cans and plastic bottle recycling is not contaminated as we are limited to 5% of the total waste collected. For paper and cardboard this figure comes down to 2%.

Refuse collection vehiclePlease put your recycling bin together with your blue bags at your normal collection point by 7am on your collection day.

Your bin and bags will be emptied at the same time by one of our split-bodied refuse vehicles pictured below.
