Planning enforcement

The erection of new buildings, extensions to building’s, or changes of use of land or buildings generally requires planning permission from the Council.

There are, however, exceptions for mainly smaller scale works, which are permitted by national regulations and known as 'Permitted Development'.

Sometimes, work is commenced without permission, or conditions imposed on a permission when it is granted, are ignored. In these cases our Enforcement Officers' role is to ensure that where clear harm is being caused appropriate action is taken to remedy the situation.

Search for planning or building applications and the planning enforcement register

You can search for planning and building applications or browse the register of all past and current applications including text and maps. You can also see what stage the application has reached.

Anyone with concerns about a development, change of use of a site or building or any other Planning related worry should contact our Officers. Complaints will be fully investigated within the law, and any expedient action taken when and where possible.

All Complainants details will be kept confidential, but people should be aware that if court proceedings are to follow the Council may ask complainants to act as witnesses within a court of law.
