Rochdale Canal history
The Rochdale Canal was first opened in 1804 and runs for 33
miles between Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire and Manchester City
Centre. It is one of the borough's greatest heritage assets and
runs through three of its four townships, Pennines, Rochale and
Middleton.
The canal was originally used for transporting goods
manufactured in the many cotton mills around the borough. During
its busiest years, the Rochdale Canal had up to 50 boat movements
per day with goods weighing up to 2,000 tons - that is the weight
of about 500 elephants!
However when the Leeds-Manchester railway line was built in 1841
and provided a faster method of transporation, the canal became
used less and less.
Today the canal is used for leisure activities including
boating, fishing, cycling, walking, wildlife spotting and much,
much more and there are many creatures and species that
inhabit the canal including birds, fish, butterflies, dragon
flies, and a variety of plants and flowers.
