Equal opportunities information
Our vision for equality and diversity is of the Council
representing, serving and employing people as equals, valuing the
diversity of their contributions and aspirations, no matter who
they are or what their circumstances. We will promote equal
opportunity and good community relations respecting and valuing the
diversity of people in the Borough. The full policy is available at

Council jobs
In each job application pack sent out there will be:
- An application form
- A job description
- A person specification
There may also be information in the pack about the service
advertising the job. There should be a copy of the Council's
Equality and Diversity Policy.
The job specification includes all the essential skills,
knowledge and experience that are required to do that job. If you
can do all the essential parts of the job, and can clearly show
this on the application form then you will be guaranteed an
interview.
This does not mean that you will be guaranteed the job, but you
will be given the opportunity in the interview to tell the panel
why you are the best person for the job.
If you need job information in Braille, large print, audiotape
or on a computer disk you should contact the Service that
advertised the job for further help.
When you apply for a vacancy you can:
- Fill in a standard application form
- Fill in the electronic version of the application form
- Send in an audio tape if your impairment makes it difficult for
you to fill in the application form sent with the pack
The audio tape must include all the details that are asked for
on the application form.
It would be useful to provide the information in the same order
as it appears on the application form this is name,
address, previous jobs and so on.
Part of the application form includes a section about disability
and is normally called Applicants with Disabilities. In this
section you are asked:
- Are you a disabled person?
- Do you have any specific requirements for attending the
interview?
It is important to fill in this part of the application for to
ensure you get all the assistance you need to apply for the
job.
Please note Rochdale Council does not accept CVs
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 says that employers, such
as Rochdale Borough Council, must make 'reasonable adjustments' for
disabled people applying for jobs and while they are at work.
Examples of reasonable adjustments include:
- A British Sign Language Interpreter being present at an
interview
- Being flexible about working hours
- Making work manuals and instructions easier to use
If you have an impairment or health condition that prevents you
from doing some part of a job we would encourage you to still apply
for the job. This is because it may be possible to make a
reasonable adjustment by changing some parts of the job.
A good example is where a disabled person is unable to use the
telephone. In this case, that part of the job could be done by
another member of staff.
