Building Schools for the Future

Go-ahead for £196m school renewal

We have committed ourself to spending £196m over the next 6 years to totally transform secondary education in the borough.  In March, our cabinet finalised the scope of the plans and agreed the overall funding of the Building Schools for the Future programme - an investment plan that will help renew or rebuild every secondary school in the borough.

Under Building Schools for the Future:

  • Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College, Wardle High, Holy Family RC/CE, and Falinge Park will be substantially rebuilt along with the Pupil Referral Unit at Darnhill.
  • Balderstone will be amalgamated with Springhill (becoming a Trust School) with major rebuilding and remodelling on the Springhill site.
  • Middleton Technology, Matthew Moss, Cardinal Langley, Siddal Moor and St Cuthbert’s will undergo major refurbishment.
  • Brownhill School is set to be remodelled and there will be minor refurbishment at the Saxon Hall Pupil Referral Unit.  Heywood Community School will close on 31 August 2010 with pupils transferring to Siddal Moor.

To get money for cutting edge technology, all schools involved in the Building Schools for the Future programme must agree to work together in an ICT Managed Service. This investment also includes Oulder Hill and Redwood Schools which were upgraded in 2007. The aim will be to deliver joined-up hi-tech education that encourages shared learning and multi-site working for staff and pupils. Executive Director responsible for schools, Terry Piggott said: “This is a once in a lifetime chance to provide pupils and staff with the facilities and resources they need to deliver excellence.” The bulk of the investment money will come from the government. The Hollingworth, Wardle, Falinge Park and Holy Family Projects will be delivered through the Private Finance Initiative. The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) proposals are now with the government who are expected to give permission to start procurement from May 2008.
