School catering - secondary

With the new, food-based standards for school meals taking effect in September 2006 our culinary specialists have created a new and exciting range of nutritionally-balanced menus that we are sure children will enjoy.

Take a look at the sample menu. We’ve a variety of meat and poultry dishes, fish, rice, pasta and more fresh fruit, vegetables and salads!

Secondary School Lunch options

High schools offer a minimum of two choices of a traditional hot ‘balanced’ school dinner. There are always plenty of options catering for different ethnicities and many vegetarian options are available. In addition to this many of the high schools offer the following options:

  • Home made burgers in a roll served with chips or potato wedges no more than twice a week and a selection of cakes, fruit or a fruit juice
  • Panini’s, hot and cold sandwich’s or wraps each with a variety of fillings every day
  • Pasta meal – this is pasta with a choice of fillings including vegetables, dairy or meat
  • Jacket potatoes – baked beans, cheese, tuna or coleslaw on a daily basis with additional fillings a couple of times a week such as curry or mince
  • Some high schools provide homemade soup on a daily basis throughout the winter months

All options include a choice of foods from the salad bar, additional bread and fresh drinking water on a daily basis. All food choices are designed to allow every child to have at least one portion of vegetables or salad and one portion of fruit in line with the new standards that are being met.

Your role

Not every child eats a school meal; many choose to bring in a packed lunch or are allowed off the school grounds at lunchtime. For some of them that means heading to the nearest chip shop. So, while we are doing all they can to make school meals healthier and more nutritious, we cannot force pupils to eat them. This is where you, as parents or carers, can help.

We ask you to talk to your children about healthy eating and to provide them with healthy meals at other times of the day as well as lunch. This means that the school and parents are working together towards building a healthy future for our next generation.

Please contact us with any feedback you have on your child’s experience of school meals.
