Home based childcare can be a good option for families with
complicated childcare needs and can be more:
- Flexible (for parents working unsociable hours)
- Economical (for families with more than one child)
- One to one (offering care for parents with children with
special needs).
Nannies
Nannies are employed by you directly and can live in or out of
your home. Many are qualified childcarers and they are directly
concerned with the care of your child.
Age range: 0 upwards.
Time available: For the hours you require.
Finding a nanny: Through a nanny agency,
advertise in local or specialist publications, search the
internet.
Au Pairs
Au Pairs are usually young people from other countries who live
with you and provide childcare while learning English.
Age range: Can help with young children when
you are present but are more appropriate for school age
children.
Time available: Usually a maximum of five hours
per day and babysit for two evenings per week. Must have at least
two full days off per week.
Finding an au pair: Through a nanny or au pair
agency.
Babysitters
Babysitters come to your home to look after your child. There
are no legal regulations for babysitters although the NSPCC
recommends that they should be over 16.
Age range: 0 upwards.
Time available: For the hours you require.
Finding a babysitter: Ask your childcare
provider as many staff offer this service. Contact a college that
runs childcare courses and ask for a student or use a babysitting
agency.
