Metrolink
Metrolink is one of the most successful light rail
systems in the UK, carrying nearly 20 million passengers every year
and from 2012, Rochdale will be part of it.
Metrolink will arrive at Rochdale train station in spring 2012
and in the town centre in 2014.
Fourteen miles of track will be laid between Rochdale, Oldham
and Manchester and there will be 14 stops along the line with trams
every 12 minutes to Rochdale.
The stops currently proposed within the borough are Newhey
Railway Station, Milnrow Railway Station, Kingsway Business Park,
Newbold on Kingsway (adjacent to Morrisons), Maclure Road near
Rochdale railway station and Smith Street in the town centre.
Bringing Metrolink to Rochdale will have significant benefits –
it will support the regeneration of Rochdale and the town centre,
improve access to employment opportunities and reduce traffic
congestion.
The Rochdale line is part of a multi-million pound improvement
plan to increase the size of the Metrolink network, provide new
state of the art trams, new ticket machines and improved passenger
facilities and information, all of which will benefit commuters to
and from Rochdale.
