Council Tax student discount
Students
Someone is classed as a student if they:
- Attend a university, polytechnic or college course which
lasts for at least an academic year, takes at least 24 weeks a year
and involves at least 21 hours per week of:
- study;
- tuition;
- *work experience; or
- a combination of those activities.
*Providing the total of the periods of work experience over the
whole of the course doesn't exceed the total of the periods of
study or tuition.
Student nurses
A person counts as a student nurse if studying
for their first inclusion on the Nursing Register.
Student nurses on Project 2000 are considered to be full-time
students.
For nurses a prescribed educational establishment is a:
- College of nursing and midwifery; or
- College of health.
Foreign language assistant
A foreign language assistant counts as a student
if they're:
- Registered with the Central Bureau for Educational visits and
exchanges, and
- Appointed as a foreign language assistant at a school or other
educational institution in Great Britain.
Foreign spouses of dependants of students
From 1st April 1995 a person is disregarded for the purposes of
discount if they're:
- The husband, wife or dependant of a student; and
- Not a British Citizen and is prevented by the terms
of their leave to enter or remain in the UK from working or
claiming benefits.
