About township committees
Each township committee comprises all the councillors of the
wards that fall within the boundaries of each township. They meet
six times per year and commence with an open forum session, which
gives local residents the opportunity to ask questions or to raise
issues of local concern.
The township committees:
- Make decisions which affect the lives of local people
- Spend money on local amenities
- Give out grants to local groups
- Give you the opportunity to get involved and influence the way
the Council delivers services
- Liaises with all sections of the Council and a wide range of
other agencies to make sure services are what people want
Each township committee has its own township fund which is spent
on local priorities.
Meetings are attended by council officers responsible for
important services as well as representatives of Greater Manchester
Police who will try to give you an answer on the spot or will
arrange for someone to get back to you. If you want to send your
question into the township office beforehand we can make sure the
right person is in attendance to answer it.
The open forum session is conducted by the chair of the township
committee whose job it is to make sure everyone has a chance to air
their views and that the session is not dominated by any one person
or group. If you want to ask a question at the open forum,
please contact your local township office team using the
contact details provided on this page.
When questions are over, the more formal part of the meeting
starts. In many cases, local people get their chance to put across
their views about the content of the committee reports that are
considered by the councillors at the meetings.
Copies of agendas and reports for the meetings are available at
least five days beforehand in our libraries and the our
customer service centres.
