Fairtrade in Rochdale

fairtrade-logoRochdale is a Fairtrade borough

Our borough was awarded Fairtrade borough status in March 2006.

There are now over 300 towns, cities and borough's across the UK who hold this status.

Fairtrade borough status is very special. It means that as a borough we have recognised the importance of Fairtrade and identified people who are committed to supporting and promoting it including ourselves, traders, schools, churches and workplaces.

To achieve the award we have to meet five goals laid down by the Fairtrade Foundation.

  • The Council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens where possible.
  • A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area's shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments (targets are set in relation to population).
  • Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places and community organisations (like churches and schools).
  • The Council must attract popular support for the campaign.
  • A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade borough status.

But it isn’t just about an award.

Everyday shoppers have the opportunity to help people to make a reasonable living by supporting manufacturers who buy from them at a fair price. By buying products that carry the Fairtrade Mark shoppers not only get a first class product but they are helping to make a difference to families across the world and as a Council we feel that this is worth doing – we now serve Fairtrade drinks at all council meetings and in the Town Hall canteen.
