Residential care - adult

Sometimes people just cannot get the care they need at home even with extra help. If this happens to you, we can help by arranging a move to a residential care home or a nursing home.

The decision to recommend a residential or nursing home will only be made after a full assessment of your needs and anyone who helps to care for you. If nursing home care is recommended, then the local health authority also has to agree to this. You can also consider homes in other local authority areas if your needs will be better met there.

  • Needs assessments – more detailed information on what needs assessments are, who does them and what happens.

We may also be able to help you with the cost of a residential care or nursing home. If you have more than £21,000 in savings or capital, you will have to pay the full costs of your stay.

  • What do I pay? - a guide to the costs and concerns of paying a care home and short stay care.

Looking for a care home?

Get free, independent reports on the quality of your local homes and care services to help you make an informed choice.

Different care homes meet different needs. Some provide full time nursing care on top of personal care, others support people with a specific disability or a medical need. We will provide information about local care homes and help to choose a care home that will be right for you now and in the future.

On the Commission for  Social Care Inspection website you can:

  • Find a list of all care homes and other services like home care in England
  • Download CSCI inspection reports on all care services
  • Find out about the quality of a care service and help choose the right care for you or a relative

The CSCI is responsible for inspecting all residential homes and inspect and write inspection reports on all adult social care services in England.
