Home improvements - home repair assistance grants
Assistance to individual householders
Home repair assistance grant is a discretionary form of
grant assistance for owner-occupiers aged 60 or over, with a
maximum limit of £5,000, for essential qualifying works only. The
grant is only available to people aged 60 or over, who have lived
in the property for three years or more and in receipt of
means-tested benefits.
This grant also has conditions attached, that on completion of
the grant, a charge will be placed upon the property and if it is
sold within 10 years, the whole amount of the grant will be repaid
back to the Council. The grant can be awarded to eliminate danger,
including electrical, gas and structural safety.
Replacement/repairs of windows/doors where their condition is
allowing water to penetrate into the property will also be
considered.
There are insufficient resources to deal with all the demands of
poor housing condition and individual need. We have to carefully
target resources to ensure we meet the most pressing needs and
priorities.

Advice and support
Although we are moving away from traditional grants, we are
looking to support and develop the housing market and can provide
technical advice on any works that may be necessary and assist in
finding a contractor to carry out the repairs. We can also provide
information about home loans and equity release to help in finding
alternative ways of funding any necessary works.
