Funeral - independant
Although a funeral director will be invited to organise the
majority of funerals, some people prefer to organise funerals
themselves. They may feel that personally organising a funeral is
their final tribute to the deceased person or they may simply wish
to save money. An independent funeral can mean taking
responsibility for collecting and moving the body,
arranging viewing of the deceased, providing a coffin, hearse
and arranging a ceremony and transporting the body to the place of
burial or cremation.
Arrangements for the ceremony can usually be made direct with
the cemetery or crematorium. If a religious ceremony is required,
the cemetery office at Rochdale Cemetery can advise on how to
contact a minister. If you do not wish to have a religious
ceremony, you may have a Civil Funeral Celebrant or Humanist
officiant to carry out the ceremony, again the cemetery office can
provide contact details, or you could even conduct the ceremony
yourself or decide to have no ceremony at all.
There is a requirement to ensure that the death is properly
certified and registered and that a funeral takes place by either
burial or cremation.
